Portrait of Maroussa Tsachaki from Master Distiller in Athens with the Axia Spirit logo

Marissa Tsachaki for Axia | Trailblazing women redefining the drinks industry

This International Women’s Day, Axia is shining a spotlight on the trailblazing women redefining the drinks industry. Throughout March, we’re showcasing female mixologists and industry leaders across London, New York, and Athens—women who bring creativity, expertise, and a bold perspective to their craft.

How did you break into the spirits industry, and what inspired you to become a Master Distiller?

Becoming a Master Distiller came naturally following my studies. My experience in wine and distillate production and sensory science also played a factor, as well as my in-depth knowledge of analytical and cognitive factors that affect flavour perception.

What changes have you seen in the industry when it comes to women taking on leadership roles in distilling?

We are still very few. Hopefully, this will change by younger generations coming into the industry. Distillate manufacturing domain still remains male-dominated. Moreover – and let's be honest here – consumer targeting is also male-orientated.

What advice would you give to women looking to carve their path in this industry?

As I would advise any young person – female or male – try and carve your own path. Even it it sounds a bit "out-of-the-box" to others, even it seems a path with lots of struggles, it is your path. If you are inspired to do so, you should go for it, and enjoy the ride!
